Darkness Falls is a full overhaul for a fresh world: it changes the early week, the build path, the tech curve, and the pressure a group has to prepare for.
The short version is simple: do not treat this as a small vanilla tweak. A save built around Darkness Falls needs a clean start, matching files, and a player group that is ready for slower progression and a harder curve.
The appeal is that the whole run feels wider. Your class choice, books, workstations, food plan, storage, enemy pressure, and late-game gear all start to matter together, so the MOD works best when you want a long campaign rather than a quick add-on.
The new growth route is class-led, not only vanilla attribute-led. The public class set includes Civilian, Farmer, Hunter, Laborer, Mechanic, Scientist, Security, and Survivalist. A solo player can learn more than one route over time, but the first route still changes the first week: food, tools, vehicles, medicine, combat, and building no longer open at the same pace for every character.
Farmer is the food and crop route, with harvest tools and crop planning becoming a real progression job. Hunter covers animal supply, ranged or stealth hunting pressure, and the meat/leather side of a group. Laborer is the mining, repair, upgrade, forge, and base-building route. Mechanic moves the run toward salvage, engines, batteries, vehicles, and repair work. Scientist carries medicine, chemistry, acid, and stronger healing craft. Security is the armor, front-line fighting, and defensive combat route. Survivalist is the broad early survival route for players who need to stay useful before the long tech ladder opens.
Darkness Falls brings back older book pressure and adds extra book pressure on top of class progression. Forge Ahead and Leather Tanning return as real unlock signals, action skills return, and level-100 skill books plus generic skill point books give the save more ways to open locked growth. If a recipe is blocked, it may be waiting on a class perk, a book, a workstation, a tool, or a material path.
Skill notes are the important habit change. When you find a recipe you already know, the pack lets that duplicate become skill-note progress instead of dead loot. That turns repeated book loot into a resource path: scrap the duplicate, collect notes, then craft the useful book or point route you are missing.
The workstation ladder is much bigger than vanilla. Mortar and Pestle, Writing Desk, Tailoring Station, multiple workbenches, Advanced Forge, Fusion Forge, and the loot-or-buy Lathe each change what the base is waiting for. The Lathe matters especially because gun-part crafting depends on it; the Advanced Forge matters because steel smelting is tied to it and it does not use fuel.
The equipment ladder also stretches out. Scrap gear fills the gap between stone and iron, titanium goes beyond steel, stainless steel returns as a building step, and the late game can move into coilguns, laser weapons, titanium building pieces, stronger medicine, and specialist craft routes. That is why the pack feels slow early and wide later.
The map is meant to feel more dangerous in places where loot and progress concentrate. Cities are denser and should be treated as risk zones; wilderness is quieter, so choosing a base location matters. Night is no longer just a faster clock because ferals become part of the pressure, and blood moons ramp faster because the horde setup has been reworked.
The end-game threat list is also different. Old zombies and hornets return, Trader Caitlin appears in the wasteland with a dedicated POI and high-end goods, and late runs can include Behemoth, demonic enemies, coilgun or laser-level fights, and POIs that punish entering without food, ammo, medicine, and escape planning.
The longer loop makes food and storage part of progression. Extra crops include fruit trees and field crops such as apple, orange, banana, coconut, wheat, carrot, and tomato routes; animal coops and snares add another supply path; clay bowls, working sinks, ovens, and larger storage give the base more jobs than a vanilla chest wall.
For co-op, the quality of the world depends on file discipline. Players and the server need the same package branch, the same install route, and a clear EAC rule; source instructions currently point players to the non-EAC executable. For public servers, publish the package version, install folder, wipe rule, and rollback route before inviting players.
Pick the first class job, secure food and water, start collecting books and notes, and track which early recipes are blocked by books, class perks, or workstations.
Push the workstation chain: Writing Desk for book pressure, Mortar and Pestle for processing, Tailoring Station for gear, and better benches or forges for the next equipment tier.
Treat titanium, stainless steel, coilguns, lasers, Fusion Forge, and wasteland Caitlin access as long-save milestones rather than quick loot goals.
Use the 96-slot backpack, 12-slot craft queue, food/water UI, crops, animal coops, snares, sinks, ovens, and larger storage to keep the long run from turning into inventory friction.
Use the first save to learn the pack. The goal is to understand the new loop before committing a main world or public server.
Use a clean test path first. The larger the MOD, the less useful a casual drag-and-drop install becomes.
For a first run, use a separate profile or clean game copy, then create a new world. For a server, test the exact client package and server package together before inviting players.
For a server owner, Darkness Falls is a server identity choice. Treat the MOD pack as the rules of the world.
Before launch, publish the exact file route, game branch, EAC rule, wipe rule, and rollback plan. Most support problems become easier when players know which package and folder they are supposed to use.
Read these notes before changing a real save or public server.
